Welcome to Vintage Delaware Tags
Delawareans love their license plates, especially low digit
tags. As you search the internet you find many sites brokering active Delaware tags. As everyone in Delaware knows
the number 6 sold for 675,000 dollars, wow! But not too many people know that an old rusty inactive Delaware tag sold
for 3,000 dollars! I have seen a coming trend of vintage tags being collected and matched to the current active tag
number. Think about how much more desirable an active 3, 4 or 5 digit tag would be if you had the original tag
from the 20's, 30's, etc. to go with it! 1905 was the first year Delaware required vehicle registration but
owners were required to make their own tag. Late 1909 was the first state issue year for a Delaware license tag.
Also until 1989 Delaware Parks and Recreation issued numbered surf fishing license tags for the front of your vehicle.
During each issue year a person who purchased a surf fishing permit was issued a uniquely numbered plate. From 1989 to
present the same plate is issued to everyone and a registration sticker is then issued. The older numbered plates are
very hard to find and have recently become very popular and highly collectible! The first issue year for surf tags was
either 1968 or 1969. Research is still ongoing to determine first issue year.
